B-UHS varsity wrestlers go 1-1 in outing in Parkersburg quad meet

PARKERSBURG — The Buckhannon- Upshur High School varsity wrestling team traveled to Parkersburg last Wednesday, December 22 for a quad meet. Jacob Orr and Levi Bender’s wrestlers have enjoyed a successful start to the 2021-22 season and looked to build upon that strong start by facing tough competition in Parkersburg.

In their first action on the mat as a team, the Bucs imposed their will upon George Washington, recording a 57-18 victory. Next, the Bucs took on the meet’s host, Parkersburg, falling 45-36, to finish the quad meet 1-1 as a team.

The Bucs varsity wrestlers combined for a total of 16 individual wins during the Parkersburg quad. Brodee Kennedy (132-pound weight classification), Nathan Cornette (145), Oscar Blonn (182), Alex Bennett (220) each finished a flawless 2-0 to lead the Bucs during their rather productive trip to Parkersburg. J.T. Thompson (285) won his only match of the meet, finishing 1-0, to round out the list of undefeated Buccaneer wrestlers. Ian Cornett (113 & 120), Liam Garcia (113 & 120), Colton Wendling (126), Andrew McDowell (138), Luke Bohnsack (152 & 160), and Trevor Miller-Waycaster (160 & 170) all finished with split 1-1 records, while Nathaniel Tyson (106) was competitive, but failed to register a win, finishing 0-2 against stout competition to round out the varsity wrestling team’s outing in Parkersburg.

Next up, the Bucs varsity wrestlers will head to Grafton Thursday for a dual. There, the Bucs will find themselves pitted in pool play against a very competitive field, featuring Fairmont Senior, Hurricane, and Grafton. Meanwhile, the Bucs JV wrestlers will next hit the mat when they travel to Gilmer to wrestle in the first tri-dual that Gilmer has ever hosted.
