WEST UNION — Both of the Buckhannon-Upshur High School Track Teams were back in action Friday, March 25, travelling to participate in the Doddridge County Invitational. The Bucs were dominant, braving downright awful weather conditions to win nine events overall en route to a first-place in the 11-team meet. The Lady Bucs also performed well, considering the challenges thrust upon them by mother nature, winning individual events to take fourth-place overall in the 8-team field.
“The Doddridge meet presented us with a great deal of adversity due to the horrible conditions our athletes competed in. There were high winds and pelting rain. Despite this, several of our boys had ‘PR’s’ (personal records) that night somehow. We were very proud to win all five relays as well as four individual events. Our whole team rose to the occasion and won the meet, against a very good single-A state champion team, Doddridge,” said Bucs Head Coach, Patty Wager.
The Buccaneers won all the meet’s relay events, putting the wealth of depth of this year’s team boasts. First, the team of Taiwo Thropp, Sterlin Thropp, Savion Farmer and Shawn Blandino won the 4x100-meter relay with a blazing fast combined time of 46.21. Next, in the 4x200-meter relay, the team of Sterlin Thropp, Camden Snyder, Dirk Riley and Taiwo Thropp secured the win with a final combined time of 1:38.44. Then, in the 4x400-meter relay, the foursome of Sterlin Thropp, Julien Larcher, Jordan Gillum and Blandino combined for a win, finishing the race in just 3:43.51. The team of Reis Leonard, Jack Waggy, Larcher and Gillum won the 4x800-meter relay event with a time of 8:39.84. Finally, the team of Chase Hackett, Zade Woody, Leonard and Carter Zuliani took first-place in the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdles event to complete the sweep for the B-UHS Boy’s Track Team in relay events.
The Bucs also managed to collect four individual wins on the evening, as Dalton Crites won the shotput event with a throw of 40’ 4”, Dirk Riley launched the discus an impressive 116’, Blandino won the 400-meter spring with a time of 51.63 and Gillum won the 1600-meter event with a time of 4:47.09.
The Lady Bucs track team saw junior Chole Cale and senior Cameron Zuliani continue their strong start to the 2022 season by collecting wins in the Doddridge Invitational. Cale earned the meet’s long jump crown, with a leap that traveled 16’ 2.75”, quite an impressive achievement, especially when accounting for the horrid weather. Zuliani won the meet’s discus event, with a throw that traveled 102’ 7”. These two events marked the only two wins for the Lady Bucs in an all-around tough day at Doddridge.
The Lady Bucs managed to nab several high-placing honors, including, Zuliani’s runner-up finish in the 300-meter hurdles, Samantha Shreve’s third-place finish in the 1600-meter event, Cale’s third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Several of the Lady Bucs relay teams also earned high-placements with their performances, highlighted by the 4x200-meter relay team, comprised of: Miah Reger, Catherine Oliveto, Zuliani and Cale, who took runner-up honors with a time of 1:55.24.
