B-UHS hosts Field Day, awards Wellness Cup

TENNERTON — Upshur County Elementary Schools participated in a field day event at the Buckhannon-Upshur High School (B-UHS) on Tuesday, May 17. Students in third through fifth grades participated in various events, including track and field, mental health and wellness and public safety activities. The event took place at the Freal “Red” Crites stadium from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Director of Wellness and Child Nutrition for Upshur County Schools stated, “The Wellness Cup Event is a combination of nutrition, fitness, mental health and overall healthy habits. We have had a lot of support from partners in the community, including St. Joseph’s Hospital and Community Care. Local gyms, including Anytime Fitness and Buckhannon Fitness, are also assisting.”

Washington District Elementary School (WDES) Third Grade Teacher Lisa Bennett said, “Today has been a great ending to a great school year. I feel like the adults have enjoyed it just as much as the kids have.”

WDES third graders Kade Holley and Jaiden Landis were participating and excited to share their thoughts about field day. “It has been fun and great and my favorite part was the bouncy house,” Holley said. “Everything has been really good and I liked the face painting,” Landis added.

Union Elementary School (UES) Physical Education Teacher Dustin Carlyle said, “We are very happy with what they did today. As long as these kids are smiling, that is what it’s all about.”

Following the events, scores were tabulated amongst the schools and winners were announced. Rock Cave Elementary School came in seventh place, Washing District Elementary School came in sixth, Hodgesville Elementary School came in fifth, Tennerton Elementary School came in fourth, French Creek Elementary School came in third, Buckhannon Academy came in second, and in first place was Union Elementary. Union was awarded the Wellness Cup Trophy, which will be kept at Union until the next Field Day/Wellness Cup event next year.
