BUCKHANNON — In response to the statewide request to wear maroon in memory of Alex Miller on Tuesday, Upshur County schools responded. Buckhannon-Upshur High School students gathered for a photo and also observed a moment of silence to honor the fallen Roane County High School football player. Miller passed away unexpectedly Friday night after collapsing on the sideline during the game. Many other schools across the state also wore maroon to honor the late player on Tuesday.
There have been several similar requests to honor other West Virginia students by wearing specifically colored attire this week as well. Several Facebook posts have asked the state to wear the following: blue on Monday to honor Tyler County student Levi Southerly who died by suicide last Thursday evening, yellow on Wednesday for Makenna Alexis from Randolph County who passed away last Thursday from unexpected illness, and orange on Friday for Riley Crum, a Ritchie County high school student who is currently battling cancer.
