KINGWOOD — The Buckhannon-Upshur Cross Country teams were back in action this past Saturday, August 27, as they traveled to take part in the Knight Night Relays Cross Country Festival at Preston County High School. The Knight Night Relays is one of the more prestigious cross country races in the state, bringing together some of the fastest teams in West Virginia and presenting them the unique challenge of navigating an already rigorous 4 x 1.5 mile course at dark.  The course was illuminated with lights from the Preston County athletic facilities, diesel light towers that are donated by Mountaineer Contractors, Inc., and tiki torches.

In addition to some outstanding distance running action from a total of 690 athletes representing thirty-seven different high school and middle school, the Knight Night Relays also held a firework display before each race and also saw Casey “the fire performer,” and paragliders flying through the sky, much to the delight of those that had gathered to take in the evening’s festivities.

The Buccaneer varsity boy’s cross country team sent two four man teams to Kingwood on Saturday night. Buckhannon-Upshur team A consisting of junior Jack Waggy alongside of a trio of seniors in Brycen Allen, Reis Leonard and Jordan Gillum finished with runner-up honors out of the thirty-eight competing teams. The Buccaneer quartet recorded a time of 32:38.67, edged out only by University’s team A, who clocked a time of 30:11.70 to take the top spot overall. Buckhannon-Upshur’s team B, consisting of freshman Joey Nolte, junior Owen Cutright, junior Jeremy Allman and freshman Alex Sappey finished just outside of the top ten, with an eleventh-place finish, clocking a solid time of 36:28.13.

On the girl’s side, Morgantown’s cross country team captured the top two spots in the field with team A posting fastest time among all thirty-seven competing teams with a time of 36:13.59, with team B not far behind clocking a time of 37:26.58. Buckhannon-Upshur’s team A, consisting of sophomore Samantha Shreve, junior Brianna Dalton, junior Mia Sappey and senior Lydia Falkenstein took fourth place overall with a time of 38:48.89. Buckhannon-Upshur’s team B, consisting of senior Jessica Williams, sophomore Pressley Bowers, junior Miah Reger and senior Malia Bowers finished just outside the top ten in fourteenth with a combined time of 44:28.29.

Head Coach Taylor Stacy’s two cross country teams posted solid all-around team performances in the Knight Night Relays, further building upon the momentum they built up over the summer and over the course of the very young Fall running season.
