Watch out, world! The Buckhannon-Upshur High School Theatre Department is back in full swing with a new one act play: Squirrel Girl Goes to College: A Squirrel Girl Play!
Squirrel Girl, or Doreen Green, is a canon, undefeated Marvel character facing her biggest fears: making friends, dancing in public, and going to college! Even after defeating Thanos single-handedly with the powers of a squirrel, Squirrel Girl is still a regular human underneath, and this play brings us through her internal challenges as a squirrel… and a girl!
Brought to life by the brilliant Elizabeth O’ Neill, Doreen is joined by the pals she makes along the way. With Christopher Dunaway as Tomás Lara-Perez and Shawnte McWhorter as Nancy Whitehead, the laughs and fun and jokes never end! Watch Doreen and her friends overcome evils such as MODOC (Elijah Sharp) and Doctor Doom (Christian Adams) … and themselves.
Although the public performance has sadly passed, the cast of Squirrel Girl is anticipating a couple more shows: a soon to be performance for the third, fourth, and fifth graders of Upshur County Schools, and a competition in January. Within that time, the show will be reworked and made even better!
Recently, the show was taken to the West Virginia Theatre Association competition located at West Virginia Wesleyan College at the Virginia Thomas Law Performing Arts Center on November 8, where they received a gold rating for their hard work and dedication! As both the play and their actors grow in experience, we hope that the community of Buckhannon will continue to support the art of theatrics as a whole!
