Lady Bucs Lacrosse senior Reese Hutson scored the only goal of the first half in last Saturday’s state title game match-up with Fairmont Senior. Alongside her teammates, Hutson showed grit, passion, determination and the heart of a champion in the face of increasingly long odds as the Polar Bears began to pull away.
Hutson has consistently been a valuable contributor to one of the best lacrosse teams in school history, always filling whatever role was asked of her as her team fought through nearly every challenge that the 2022 season posed them, compiling a near 18-2 record. Hutson’s well-rounded game made her a versatile chess piece that head coach Jamie Greene could use to move around in order counter his opponents gameplan all season long. It was Hutson’s utility, diversity of roles assumed, overall competitive nature and her knack for being a great teammate that earned her athlete of the week honors.
The 4x400-meter Buccaneers Track Relay Team
While Shawn Blandino, Sterlin Thropp, Julian Larcher and Jordan Gillum, four names that many Buckhannon-Upshur sports fans have come to be familiar with after their electric performances have highlighted many track stories this spring, these four athletes accomplished something truly historic in the 2022 West Virginia Track and Field Championships at Charleston’s Laidley Field, on Thursday, May 19 from Saturday, May 21.
These four B-UHS athletes went in to the state meet with the kind of lofty expectations almost unparalleled in school history, as they had not dropped a single 4x400-meter race all year long. The four boys completed the season sweep of 4x400-meter Class-AAA competition by winning the state title and setting a new school-record time of 3:25.26 in the process. Thropp, Blandino, Gillum and Larcher combined to beat the previous all-time school-best mark of 3:26.79 in the event and etching their names in Upshur County sports lore as undefeated state champions forever.
