B-UHS Athlete of the Week 4-30-2022

Gaidian Adams

Senior attacker/defender Gaidian Adams posted one of her strongest all-around outings of the 2022 campaign by scoring 4 goals and having a literal field day defensively against the St. Albans Red Dragons. Adams was seemingly all over the field for head coach Jamie Greene’s Lady Buccaneers, helping deliver her team the 17-6 road win. While Adams offensive contributions certainly had a huge impact on the game’s script, it was her defensive numbers that really jump off the stat sheet.

In addition to combining with senior classmate Miranda Greene to form a lethal “one-two” offensive punch for the Lady Bucs, Adams was also one of the team’s most consistent defenders, fielding 11 ground balls and forcing two Red Dragon turnovers. Whether she was attacking the net or being a disruptive force defensively, the senior left her fingerprints all over this game, culminating in Adams garnering athlete of the week.

Brayden Hamer

Junior shortstop/pitcher Brayden Hamer earns athlete of the week honors after putting together a solid week from the plate for head coach Adam Squires’ Buccaneers. Hamer’s week was highlighted by an absolutely electric hitting performance from the plate against Route #33 rival Elkins last Wednesday, April 20. Hamer’s consistent, strong bat was busy all game long, compiling a perfect 2-2 hitting mark and driving in five total runs. Hamer drove in runs on a single in the second, a walk in the second, and a double in the third, capping off a very strong day seeing and hitting the ball for the junior shortstop.

While Hamer cooled off a bit as the week wore on, going 0-2 in a 11-1 loss to Fairmont Senior on Thursday, April 21, 1-2 with one walk and 2 strikeouts in a 9-3 loss to Shady Spring on Friday, April 22, and 0-1 in a 16-5 loss to Spring Valley on Saturday, April 23. He started coming back around this past Monday, April 25, as he showed off his versatility as a player, ending the game on the mound in relief of Bennett and Marple. Hamer threw seven strikes on fourteen pitches, only walking one batter. Hamer also recorded 2 hits and an RBI; starring for the Bucs in a close 6-5 loss to Lincoln. Hamer’s outstanding performance against Elkins and the versatility of his skillset as evidenced by his strong pitching outing to end the Lincoln game made the junior an easy selection for athlete of the week honors.
