B-UHS Athlete of the Week 4-16-2022

Clay Ware

Senior Clay Ware, a 2021 West Virginia All-State Division II Hon-orable Mention selection as a junior, has only increased his profile as one of the top boy’s lacrosse prospects in the Mountain state as a senior. While, the Bucs started the season out losing their first four games to open the 2022 campaign, Ware scored 8 goals in that span, leading the team in scoring, while doing his part to keep his team competitive through a brutal early stretch of the schedule for the Buccaneers. Ware’s aggression and high I.Q. and balance as both an attacker and playmaker, is what sets him apart.

After a 0-4 start, Ware and the Bucs’ lacrosse team won their next two games. Over Preston County on Tuesday, April 5 and then Musselman on Saturday, April 9 to get their season back on track. As always, Ware played a pivotal part for head coach D.J. Ray’s team’s attack. The senior midfielder scored 3 goals on 13 shot attempts on goal during 7-goal, 14-7 rout of the Knights on Tuesday, April 5. Ware followed his performance against the Knights up with an equally impressive game against the Applemen, netting a goal on 7 shot attempts on goal, to go along with an assist during the Bucs narrow 2-goal, 9-7 win at home against Musselman back on Saturday, April 9.

Taylor Spratt

Freshman Taylor Spratt, a fabu-lous freshman first-baseman for head coach Levi Bender’s Lady Buccaneer softball team, has been on a tear at the plate thus far in the month of April. During the Lady Bucs 19-3 win over St. Clairsville back on Saturday, April 2; Spratt went 2-3 and scored 3 runs. She then followed that performance up with another strong offensive outing, going 1-3, scoring a run, and recording 2 RBIs. in the Lady Bucs’ next game of the month, against East Fairmont back on Monday, April 4.

The talented freshman continued her hot streak this week, going 2-3, scoring a run, and driving in 2 RBIs during a 14-3 loss to rival Philip Barbour back on Monday, April 11. Spratt accounted for all of the Lady Bucs’ offense during the loss to their Route #33 rivals. Against Bridgeport, in the very next game, on Wednesday, April 13; coach Bender’s team found much more overall success, again with Spratt leading the way; posting a 1-2, one run, 2 RBI stat line during a 10-2 win over the Indians.
