B-UHS Athlete of the Week 2-26-2022

Freshman Wrestler

Ian Cornett

Cornett earned Athlete of the Week honors after taking fourth place in the Big 10 Conference Championship tournament and fifth place in the Region I Championship tournament.

During the Big 10 Conference Championship tournament, Cornett recorded a 1-2 overall record, 6 takedowns, 2 escapes and 5.5 team points.

Cornett followed that strong outing up last weekend in Glen Dale during the Region I Championship tournament, recording a 2-2 overall record, 2 takedowns, 6 escapes/reversals and 10.5 team points. Cornett, the tournament’s #6-seed in the 113-pound weight class claimed a fourth place finish to clinch the first appearance in the state championship tournament of his career.

#23 Junior Forward

Kendal Currence

Currence earned Athlete of the Week honors after a strong junior campaign for head coach Rob Kittle’s varsity girls basketball team.

Currence played a huge role in the Lady Bucs overwhelming successful 17-5 regular season. When her team needed her the most, in a “win-or-go home” game against a resilient Bridgeport Indians squad, Currence answered the call in a major way.

Against Bridgeport, Currence posted 18 points, 9 rebounds and 1 block; narrowly missing out on a double-double. Currence teamed with freshman standout Alyssa Abel to form a potent “1-2 punch” on offense that the Indians couldn’t seemed to find an answer for defensively.
