B-U Volleyball team celebrates 2018 season

The 2018 Buckhannon-Upshur volleyball team celebrates the 2018 season at a recent banquet. The Lady Bucs went 17-10 during this past fall’s campaign.

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc volleyball team had a successful 2018 campaign under first-year head coach Ashley Stanton.

The Lady Bucs finished the season with a 17-10 record. The Lady Bucs’ season came to an end at the hands of University in sectional play.

It was an interesting beginning of the year for Stanton who was hired near the start of the season after guiding the middle school team the last several seasons.

“I was hired about a week before the high school season started and my assistant coach Lisa Crites just a couple days before,” remarked Stanton. “We had a lot on our plate the first couple of weeks. We ran our own team along with getting the middle school program started as they awaited our replacements. But as first year coaches, we believe our season went very well.”

The late start of the new coaching staff didn’t hamper the Lady Bucs as they opened the season with a 4-0 record.

“Most of our athletes were past athletes that we had coached at the middle school level, which made our move into our new roles easy because we knew the girls,” Stanton said. “We were already familiar with their personalities, strengths and weaknesses. With having run the middle school program over the last three years, we were able to step into our new roles fairly easily. It will be helpful in the future to have more control over our summer program and schedule.”

Individually, junior Abbie Vincent was named to the All-State Honorable Mention Team and the Big 10 Conference First Team.

Freshman Shelby McDaniels led the team in aces with 76 while Vincent was second with 47 and Benson was third with 27.

Benson led the squad in assists by a large margin with 320 while Luterek was second with 195 and freshman Meghan Bailey had 57.

Sophomore McKenzie Reynolds led the squad with 209 kills while Vincent collected 139 and Johnna Smith had 110.

Reynolds was first in blocks on the team with 60 while Smith had 30 and McDaniels had 19.

McDaniels recorded 206 digs while Smith recorded 163 and Luterek had 117.

“All of our girls are wonderful,” remarked Stanton. “We enjoyed working with our athletes from the past three years along with the three seniors, Autumn Hatfield, Kaitlyn Luterek and Cara Benson,” Stanton stated. They were a great contribution to the team as leaders and they will be missed. I’m excited to see the return of juniors, Abbie Vincent and Johnna Smith. I look forward to their leadership for the younger girls. Both I and coach Crites are excited to see what the 2019 season brings for Lady Buc volleyball.”
