Drew Griffith of the Buckhannon-Upshur swim Buccaneers won the 100-yard butterfly and was part of two winning relay teams during the Bucs home meet Friday at the West Virginia Wesleyan pool. Griffith was honored as the lone senior on the team prior to the event as part of “Senior Night” festivities. The Bucs beat Philip Barbour and Grafton in the tri-meet.

BUCKHANNON – Drew Griffith made the most of his “Senior Night” experience for the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers during their home tri-meet Friday night at the West Virginia Wesleyan College pool.

Griffith, the lone senior on the team, won one individual event and was part of two victorious relay teams as well.

Individually, Griffith won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:08.07 and was part of the 200-yard medley relay team with Dane Ammons, Garrett Butler and Sam Squires that won with a time of 2:05.88 and the 400-yard freestyle relay unit of Ammons, Will Sparks and Squires that took first with a clocking of 4:15.13.

Overall, the Bucs won eight of the 10 events they competed in.

The Bucs easily won the tri-meet with 89 points while Philip Barbour was second with 33 and Grafton was third with 20.

“I thought the boys were impressive across the board,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Will Squires. “Again, we asked most of the boys to swim some races they don't normally do to compete in the team standings.”

Sam Squires swam to a pair of individual wins in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.76) and the 200-yard IM (2:29.66) as well as the two relay wins while Butler claimed a pair of individual firsts in the 200-yard freestyle (2:18.99) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:27.97) and the two relay wins as well.

Will Sparks gained the other win for Buckhannon-Upshur as he took first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.41), as well earning one relay win.

Earning seconds were Dane Ammons in the 100-yard backstroke (1:13.63) and Sparks in the 100-yard freestyle (57.40). Ammons also picked up a pair of relay wins.

“We had great swims from Sparks who dropped a second in his 100-freestyle time, Butler who dropped 15 seconds in his 500-freestyle time and Griffith who ended up taking first place in his 100-butterfly on Senior Night,” Squires stated. “The boys haven't had the numbers to truly compete at large invitationals this year, but I am very proud of their work since coming back from Christmas Break.”

The tri-meet was the last regular-season meet for Squires and his Bucs.

They will now focus on the Big 10 Conference Championships this Saturday at Fairmont State University which starts at noon.

They will host the Region III Championships at Wesleyan on Saturday, Feb. 2.

“The team has been working hard in practices and I am excited to see how we end our season with our last couple of meets,” concluded Squires.
