American Red Cross offers donor rewards

BUCKHANNON — The American Red Cross continues to struggle with a blood shortage and urges donors of all types—especially O—to make an appointment to donate. The blood shortage is reportedly negatively affecting blood availability across the country.

With the passing of the 4th of July weekend, a time of year in which the demand for blood transfusions spikes, the American Red Cross is offering rewards as an incentive and a “Thank You” to donors who give blood during the month of July. All donors will receive a $10 Amazon Gift Card, and if you donate before July 7th, you will also receive an American Red Cross embroidered hat. In addition, all eligible donors will be entered for a chance to receive Gas for a Year ($5,000 value). For more information, visit www.RCBlood.org/fuel.

Upshur County’s American Red Cross representative Allen Nash strongly encourages local donations. “I typically see the same people come in to donate blood. It would be great to see some more first-time donors,” Nash asserted. “I encourage everyone to challenge their family, friends and co-workers to donate blood. The Red Cross usually experiences a decline in blood donations during long holiday weekends. Every donation will help ease the severe shortage of blood and could save more than one life. A donation will also help ensure hospitals have enough blood to perform critical treatments and surgeries.”

If you received a COVID-19 vaccination, the manufacturer and date of your vaccination determines your blood donation eligibility. It is important that you know your manufacturer upon arrival for donation.
