BUCKHANNON — Those who visit the Upshur Veterinary Hospital will likely notice a new face when visiting the office. Dr. Philip Abbott, originally of Ashland, Kentucky, has joined the team as a general practitioner veterinarian.
Abbott grew up in Kentucky and when he started college there at Morehead State University, he was originally a music major. Abbott reported that he knew pretty early on that music was not going to be what he ended up finishing.
After about three years of schooling, Abbott changed his focus to veterinary education and transferred to Auburn University in Alabama. He reported, “Morgantown was my first job. I was doing relief work, so I was also working some in Pittsburgh and doing a great deal of traveling.” Abbott moved back to his hometown area in Kentucky for four years, growing a practice where he held ownership.
Abbott followed his wife back to the Buckhannon area in December, where she grew up. She was the manager at the practice he worked at in Morgantown and was also his practice manager in Kentucky when they relocated. Abbott stated, “We are really enjoying it here.” Abbott and his wife are avid partakers of the outdoors and enjoy being close to the mountainous areas and parks nearby.
Abbott currently works part-time at the Upshur Veterinary Hospital and he also works at the emergency clinic in Fairmont. Abbott has done a great deal of emergency care, and despite the demanding pace, he enjoys general practice just as much. With general practice, seeing all the aspects of care is what Abbott reportedly really appreciates. “This is the main place I am working. I am glad to be working with the people around here,” explained Abbott.
The Record Delta welcomes Dr. Abbott and wishes him much success in the coming year.
