Program-changing class honored during Wednesday night’s win over Bridgeport

TENNERTON — Their adventure began as bright-eyed freshmen looking to rebuild the Buckhannon-Upshur High School girls basketball program.

Four years later that group — now seasoned seniors — has led the Lady Bucs to record of 73-21, been to three straight Class AAA state tournaments, set a school record for wins in a season, captured a Big 10 Conference title and played for a state title.

On Wednesday night, the B-UHS faithful honored those seniors before the top-ranked Lady Bucs defeated Class AA, No. 8 Bridgeport, 52-34, to extend their win streak to 13 games. They are now 17-1 overall and 8-1 in Big 12 games.

“Those girls have been with me from my start [at B-UHS] and all the way to their playing days at the middle school,” said B-U coach Jeremy Maxwell. “They’re a special group and have worked very hard to turn this program around.

“They lead by example and have shown our younger players what it takes to be successful.”

Hanna McClung, Lauren Bennett, McKinley Gaudet and Ashton Maxwell were the four seniors honored during the night.

McClung, who has signed to play at Lenoir-Rhyne College, was recognized before the game for becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer. The talented point guard now has over 1,400 points during her time at B-UHS after scoring 18 points in Wednesday’s win.

McClung, along with Bennett and Gaudet, are among the top 10  leading scorers in school history.

Bennett tallied 10 points against the Indians, while Gaudet and Maxwell chipped in five apiece.

The game was deadlocked at 8-8 after one quarter before the Lady Bucs embarked on of their potent game-changing runs, using defense and key 3-pointers from McClung, Gaudet and Maxwell to build a 10-point lead, at 26-16, at the intermission.

The lead grew to 42-22 after three quarters before the Lady Buc  seniors and other starters gave way to the reserves.

McClung finished the night with five assists and seven steals to go along with her game-high 18 points. McKinley Gaudet had six rebounds, including four on the offensive end,  and Audrey Gaudet added five rebounds and three steals.

Kaitlin Smith had 12 points to lead Bridgeport (12-6, 8-4 Big 10).

B-U was scheduled to visit Lewis County on Thursday night and remain on the road Saturday at John Marshall.
