2019 Green Bean Celebration


The Green Bean Cook-off will be held at Jawbone Park on  Friday,  August 9 at 5 p.m.

Judging at 6 p.m. followed by People’s Choice tasting.

During the cook-off, you will be able to snap beans at the Festival Friday’s performance venue.

All proceeds to benefit the Parish house.

Procedures and Rules for 

Contestants: Green Bean Cook-off

The competition is open to all residents of Upshur County. Each dish must have green beans as the main ingredient. There is no entry fee. Everyone attending the event is asked to bring a donation of fresh (or canned) green beans for the Parish House.

Applications will be accepted up to the competition on August 9th at Festival Fridays. The winner will be announced that evening at 7:30.

Set up is at 5:00 pm. Contestants are to prepare and present four (4) portions of your dish. Judging will start at 6:00 pm. Please prepare your dish off-site and bring it in a crock-pot or some other type of warming device. You will plate and serve the judges first. One plate will be for a photo opportunity and served to the audience.

All cooks will supply their own cooking ingredients, cooking utensils, and presenting dishware and cutlery for the four portions that you will prepare. There will be electricity available for crock-pots, heating elements, etc. You may have an assistant.

Prize winners will be announced at 7:30 pm at the competition during intermission. One grand prize of a 3-piece cast iron skillet set will be awarded. There will be a People’s choice winner.

Green Bean Stroll 2019

The 4th Annual Green Bean Stroll will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, 9 a.m. at the River Walk.

The course is 1 mile and the goal is to finish. It is OK to stop and “smell the roses.”

You can use anything non –powered except for electric scooters for the handicapped. Strollers, scooters, tricycles, little red wagons, bicycles, roller skates, skateboards, wheelbarrows, garden carts, wheelchairs, walking, runnning are all acceptable. Costumes and groups are encouraged. All proceeds to benefit the Parish house.

Registration is located at the River walk. Fee for event: Bag of fresh green beans snapped, two cans of green beans or $5.00. 

Green Bean Weekend T-shirts are available to order! The shirts are $15 each (slightly more for sizes 2X and higher). You can place your order at the Chamber/Visitor’s Center on Main Street, or when you register for the stroll. Delivery expected two weeks after the event. Please direct any questions to

Size choices:

Toddlers: 6, 12, 18, 24 months

Young children: 2t, 4t, 6t

Youth: extra small, small, medium, large, extra large

Adults: small to XL $15

2x, 3x, and 4x are $20
